Seven Ways to Practice Self-Love

Self-love is a popular term that we hear often and you might be wondering what does it actually mean and how do you practice it? If so, you’re not alone since there are many layers to it. Self-love is a state of appreciation for oneself and you can practice it by engaging in behaviors that prioritize your needs and support your overall well-being. Not only does it help you improve your relationship with yourself, but it also forms the foundation for positive relationships, resilience, personal growth, and life satisfaction. If you’re feeling lost on your self-love journey, here are seven ways to help you start practicing it more.

VALIDATE YOUR EMOTIONS

Hold space for yourself and allow yourself to feel your feelings. It’s normal to want to ignore unpleasant feelings; however, this can cause them to build up and it sends a message that they’re unimportant. Acknowledging or writing down your thoughts and emotions can help you be more mindful of them. Journaling also helps you better understand why you might be experiencing certain feelings and how you can continue supporting your emotional needs.

ALLOW YOURSELF TO MAKE MISTAKES

When making mistakes, try giving yourself grace in the same way you might for others. Practice viewing mistakes as a necessary part of learning that provides opportunities for growth. Additionally, incorporate positive self-talk and affirmations to promote a healthier relationship with yourself and increase motivation. Give yourself time to reflect on what you've learned and how you can improve in the future.

STOP COMPARING YOURSELF TO OTHERS

It’s normal to want to compare yourself with others but if you do it often, it can have a negative impact on your well-being and diminish your value. Instead of focusing on where you are compared to others, try to focus on your own progress and personal strengths. Also, be mindful of your social media usage and if it triggers comparisons. Remember, everyone’s journey is different and it’s unfair to compare yourself to someone else.

FIND BEAUTY IN THE SIMPLE THINGS

Although small moments can seem insignificant, they make up our everyday lives and should be recognized and celebrated. Start by allocating small amounts of time throughout your day for intentional pauses. You can also incorporate a gratitude or mindfulness practice to help you be more aware of the present moment.

TAKE CARE OF YOUR MIND AND BODY

When you eat nutritious foods and practice movement it positively affects your mind-body connection. Try to reflect on how you feel after certain activities or foods you eat to make sure they are supporting your health. If there are habits that aren’t making you feel good then it could be a sign to work on gradually changing them.

SPEAK KINDLY TO YOURSELF

The way you speak to yourself matters — when you engage in negative self-talk, it can have a lasting impact on your self-esteem and the beliefs you hold about yourself. The next time you realize you’re talking down to yourself, ask “Would I say this to someone I care about?” Practicing daily affirmations or mantras are also a simple, yet effective way to shift your mindset.

DO THINGS THAT BRING YOU JOY

Whether it’s art, baking, reading or yoga think about what you brings you joy and if you have been able to make time for it recently. Having hobbies that stem from passion can help you be more present in the here and now. You can also try to challenge yourself in these areas to promote personal growth.

Self-love is a journey that involves continuous self-reflection, learning, and adaptation. Remember to be gentle and patient with yourself throughout the process and take moments to celebrate progress.
